The Chanticleer Community Theatre traces its roots back to the Autumn of 1952, with a small group of dedicated volunteers who began performing one-act plays and other short features in the ballroom of the Chieftain Hotel in downtown Council Bluffs, IA. It's present home is the Joe Smith Memorial Theater, named after one of Council Bluffs most prominent retail merchants, and a humanitarian. The Joe Smith Memorial Theater was dedicated in 1963 and has continued to grow ever since, adding extra costume space, bathrooms, shop space, a kitchen and board room and many other features.
